Table for Four, Please

A lively group discussion, an intimate tête-à-tête, an inner monologue — in your view, when it comes to a good conversation, what’s the ideal number of people?

Four.

That’s the best number for a stimulating group discussion (three can whisper furtively while the fourth uses the bathroom). That’s also the perfect number for our family (split evenly down the center, two males, two females) and a ridiculous number of successful bands have or had four members (The Doors, The Beatles, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and N.W.A.)

Internally as well, I have the Judgmental Asshole, the Pollyanna, the Maytag (a rabble rouser-you know, he likes to stir sh!t up) and the Zen Master. Each of them takes their turn at various points of my life and my day at leading the charge.

Some of my most memorable conversations and wild times have been in groups of four. I have a dear group of three friends with whom I get together on a regular basis. We usually try to meet up every 1-2 years and rent a vacation home and spend most of week together. So far, we’ve been to NorCal, Santa Fe, Freeport, ME, San Diego, Flagstaff, Seattle, the Grand Canyon and various other short trips in the Mountain West. Our infectious laughter spills out and we come back to our respective homes recharged and giggling.

I love my family and these friends so much and I look forward to growing old together with them.

Four. It’s the magic number.
